Overview
Day 1: Pangkalan Bun – Kumai Port – Tanjung Harapan
Arrive at Pangkalan Bun Airport, located on the island of Borneo, known locally as Kalimantan. Upon your arrival, your guide will be waiting for you. You’ll then transfer by car (approximately 15-20 minutes) to the port of Kumai, where your exciting adventure begins! You’ll board our speedboat, and the guide will confirm with the crew that everything is ready for your journey up the famous Sekonyer River.
If your flight arrives early (before 11:30 AM), you’ll have the chance to visit the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center. At 3:00 PM, the park rangers will feed the orangutans, offering you the opportunity for your first close encounter with these remarkable creatures. Tanjung Harapan, which translates to "Cape of Hope," is located in a wetland area, so be sure to apply plenty of mosquito repellent, especially in the afternoon. Here, you can also participate in a reforestation project, planting a tree and contributing to conservation efforts.
After your visit to the rehabilitation camp, you’ll continue upstream on the river, relaxing on the boat while keeping an eye out for wildlife along the Sekonyer River. It’s common to see groups of proboscis monkeys and macaques in the treetops, or even crocodiles and lizards in the shallow waters along the riverbank. A picnic lunch will be served during the tour. Afterward, you’ll transfer to your hotel for check-in and enjoy the evening at leisure. We will transfer you to your hotel for check-in and some rest in Rimba Eco Lodge.
Day 2: Pondok Tangguy – Camp Leakey
After breakfast at the hotel, you'll head out in time to witness the Orangutans being fed at Pondok Tanggui Camp (9 AM). As you arrive, you’ll soon notice the treetops begin to stir, and before long, the silhouettes of the Orangutans will emerge as they make their way to the feeding platform. Pondok Tanggui once served as a release camp for rehabilitated young Orangutans, and they continue to be fed daily to prevent them from straying outside the park in search of food. If they venture beyond the park, they risk falling into traps set by settlers or becoming entangled in palm oil plantations. After the feeding session, you’ll board the speedboat again to continue up the river. Watch as the river’s color gradually changes, and keep an eye out for crocodiles, large lizards, Gibbons, and proboscis monkeys along the way.
Next, you’ll arrive at Camp Leakey, an iconic Orangutan research and rehabilitation center that has been operational since 1971. Founded by UCLA student Birute Galdikas, it was named after her teacher, paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey. Over 200 Orangutans have been rehabilitated and returned to the wild thanks to the work done here. Since 1995, Indonesia’s government has prohibited the introduction of more Orangutans to the camp, allowing the remaining ones to increasingly adapt to the wild. Today, Camp Leakey continues to serve as a hub for studying Orangutan behavior and feeding.
Your guide will lead you through the jungle, giving you a chance to spot wild Orangutans and other animals in their natural habitat. At 2:00 PM, you’ll witness another Orangutan feeding session. You can also explore a small museum created by Dr. Birute Galdikas. If weather and conditions permit, you’ll enjoy a short jungle trek on the way back to the boat, with more opportunities to search for wild Orangutans and other wildlife. Along the way, our local guides—many of whom were born in the jungle—will share their knowledge on identifying animals and plants, or simply offer their life experiences in this unique environment. The Borneo jungles have provided sustenance for generations of settlers, supplying food, water, and medicine. Remember, never put anything in your mouth without your guide’s recommendation. Afterward, return to your hotel for some well-earned rest.
Note: The Birute Galdikas Museum at Camp Leaky is currently closed for maintenance purposes. Regrettably, visits to this site will not be possible until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will keep you updated on the reopening of the museum. Overnight stay in Rimba Eco Lodge.
Day 3: Hotel – Pangkalan Bun
After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, our team will meet you at the hotel and accompany you to the airport.
